Valentia Island King Scallops Festival 13th & 14th July 2017
Date: Saturday & Sunday July 2017 Destination: Knightstown Valentia Island Author: Valentia Island Tourism
Venue: Knightstown, Valentia Island
The Valentia Island King Scallop Festival Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July is a celebration of a unique, sustainable and very delicious native seafood. It is a showcase of how a voluntary community initiative can successfully create an exceptional event. A small and determined team of locals were keen to come up with a summer event that would draw more visitors to the Island. They decided on a celebration of the King Scallop that is distinctive to Valentia harbour. All strands of the community have come together to produce a weekend of entertainment for all the family.
The island is situated on the Iveragh Peninsula in South West Kerry just off the main Ring of Kerry route which makes it one of Ireland's best kept secrets.
A key ingredient to the success of the Valentia Island King Scallop festival is the diversity of events taking place - family fun and entertainment is central. Festival highlights this year include on-street cooking demonstrations, a junior triathlon, cricket match, craft fair, angling competition, blessing of the local fishing boats, live street music and of course the crowning of this year's Mr. King Scallop.
