South Kerry Gaeltacht

Welcome to South Kerry Gaeltacht

Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh:

Tá Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthach timpeall ar Mhór Chuaird Chiarraí – Baile an Sceilg agus Bá Naomh Fhionáin ar an gcósta agus Máistir Gaoithe fan an ghleanna cois Abhainn na hUíne. Tá radharcra aoibhinn sléibhe agus farraige chomh breá agus atá in Éirinn anseo, le radharcanna iontacha ar Sceilg Mhichíl agus Oileán na gCánóg.

Níl cuairt ar Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh iomlán gan léargas a fháil ar Na Scealga. Trí oileán atá san oileánra seo – Sceilg Mhichíl mar a raibh mainistir sa luath-Chríostaíocht, An Sceilg Bheag lena coilíneachtaí éan agus Oileán na gCánóg. Tugtar suntas ar leith do sheandálaíocht Sceilg Mhichíl agus do na hiarsmaí atá fós ar marthain ann. Tá tábhacht ar leith don éanlaith sna carraigeacha garbha farraige seo. Láthair le tábhacht domhanda don ngainéad is ea An Sceilg Bheag.

The Iveragh Gaeltacht:

The Iveragh (Uíbh Ráthach) Gaeltacht encompasses areas off the Ring of Kerry such as Baile an Sceilg (Ballinskelligs) and Bá Naomh Fhionáin (The Glen) on the coast and Máistir Gaoithe (Mastergeehy) along the valley of the lovely Inny River. This area is known for some of Ireland’s most breath-taking coastal and mountainous scenery, with magnificent views of the Skellig Rocks and Puffin Island.

A visit to the Gaeltacht area of Uíbh Ráthach is not complete without gaining an insight into The Skellig Rocks. This rock island constitutes Sceilg Mhichíl (Great Skellig) where there was an early Christian monastery and An Sceilg Bheag (Little Skellig) with its huge bird colonies. The third island in the group is Oileán na gCánóg (Puffin Island). Beside the significant archaeological interest in Sceilg Mhichíl and the wonderfully preserved monastic settlement this remarkable group of inhospitable, weather-torn rocks, plays host to huge colonies of sea birds, both native and migratory. The Little Skellig is one of the world’s greatest gannetries.
