Welcome to Tarbert

Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

The wall plaque refers to the fact that there was a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at this location in 1830.  One of its earliest preachers Rev Gideon Ouseley rowed across the Shannon from Clare and as he came ashore he uttered the immortal words 'I take Tarbert in the name of the Lord Jesus'. John Wesley's chapel served a small second generation Palatine congregation who had moved to Tarbert from Rathkeale in County Limerick. They gave Christian witness here for 125 years but due to declining numbers the chapel ceased to function as a place of worship and was demolished in the 1960's.
