Welcome to Listowel

Lartigue Monorail

A unique part played by Listowel in Irish Railway history is that of having hosted the world's first monorail operation. The Listowel and Ballybunion Railway was built on the Lartigue system, a double-engined steam locomotive straddling an elevated rail. Nowadays, a visit to the museum will include a short journey on a full-scale diesel-powered replica of the original monorail. After your journey, you can visit the Lartigue Museum to watch a film of the original Lartigue and see models, displays and memorabilia. The friendly staff will be on hand to provide information and answer your questions.
