Welcome to Duagh

Duagh Charity Walk 2012

Despite heavy rain in the hours before the walk and some showers during the walk, as well as the distraction of the North Kerry Final scheduled for later in the day, approximately 60 people took part in this year's walk. Congratulations and well done to all those who participated. It was not easy to face that weather after a big feed of turkey and ham on Christmas Day. The day was enjoyed by all and the entertainment at O Brien's Bar was enjoyed by all who attended. Considering the weather and the other attractions, it is great credit to the organisers and the participants that so many took part this year.

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Plans are afoot for the 7th Annual Duagh Charity Walk on St. Stephen's day
Since the first walk in 2006, over €60,000 has been raised for charity from people taking part in the walk, sponsorship of the walkers, raffles etc. Since the initial walk, the event has become a fixture in the social calender in Duagh. Taking place at a time when many people come home, it is an event which reunites those living in Duagh with those who have left Duagh and venture home on the holidays each Christmas. The walk is a very social event, full of craic and witticisms and is a great family event where some much needed exercise after the big Christmas dinner is obtained in a safe and sociable manner. The walk starts from O Briens bar and also finishes up there with hot drinks to revive the walkers!

The St. Stephens day walk fell victim to the hard winters of 2010 and 2011 when road conditions prevented the walk but undaunted, the organisers held the walk a few weeks later when conditions were more suitable and very successful events were held on both occasions.

The walk this year is in aid of Crumlin childrens Hospital which even though a new hospital is being planned continues to do outstanding work for sick children in Ireland in cramped and overcrowded conditions which are not conducive to making hospital stays less daunting for their young patients and their parents and place an undue burden on the medical and nursing staff.

A lot of organising goes into the event each year with preparations starting in October. Numerous people give of the time to publicise the event, marshal the walkers on the day and ensure the walk is carried on in a safe manner.

This year's walk will take place on St. Stephens Day at 11.30 am. Sponsorship cards are available locally at  O Briens Bar, Steves shop, Mike Carmody or Kathleen O Keeffe, raffle tickets are on sale at O Brien's Bar and further information is available from Mick Carmody at 087-8172745 or on ,http://www.facebook.com/DuaghChristmasCharityWalk. a collection bottle for loose change is also available at Steve's foodstore.

Due to the North Kerry football final taking place on 26th December at 2.30 in Listowel involving the Duagh Senior team, there is a slight change to the Walk Schedule. There will be a 10 am start for anyone who wants an early start to take in the match and there will also be a second walk at 11.30am to facilitate everyone one else. The after walk entertainment planned for O Brien's Bar on that night will go on as planned. Of course, no-one is disbarred from doing the walk twice on the day!!!!!
