Welcome to Castleisland

Castleisland Races

Castleisland Races is the oldest recorded pony and horse meeting in Ireland since 1859. It plans to stage a mid-summer music festival to coincide with the annual two- day race meeting held at Powell's Road in mid June.

The festival will hit the ground running this year (2013) due to the many contributions from the local businesses. Mr Charlie Farrelly, who has been one of the main driving forces behind the scenes of the town's hugely successful St Patrick's Day Parade for many years, said that, while the meeting is being aimed at the publicans of the town, anyone with the business interests of the area at heart or people interested in getting involved from the music side of the proposal will be equally welcome.

The meeting will be celebrating its 154th year in operation. Today over €100,000 has been raised for local charities in Castleisland.  This year the proceeds from the meeting will be donated to the Kerry Cancer Support Group with a smaller donation of €500 to the Castleisland Social Club in recognition of their efforts to aid the elderly..

The big race of the event, the Island Derby, is being kindly sponsored by ROL Construction Ltd and Mortimer Reidy of Knocknagoshel.

Famous jockeys, Norman Williamson, Paul Thompson, Paul and Nina Carberry to name but a few who began their careers in Castleisland are among the list of celebrities who often make a special appearance at the family fun, action packed, pony and horse meeting every year.
